Early pregnancy and dating scan
The sixth week of pregnancy is quite a milestone for you and your better half. All this is indicated to you via some symptoms like morning sickness, mood swings, frequent urination and more, but to confirm that your pregnancy is healthy, a visit to your healthcare specialist is a must. The presence of a new life healthily growing inside you is monitored via an early pregnancy scan also called viability or dating scan, where the doctor confirms the pregnancy, establish an estimated due date and gives you more accurate details on your pregnancy.

This week your baby experiences a huge growth spurt. Your baby’s heartbeat will be visible on a viability ultrasound scan. Your baby is no longer a zygote or a single cell. The cells have multiplied rapidly and now the embryo is taking shape. From week 9 you can have Non-Invasive Prenatal Screening, to assess your risk of Down’s Syndrome and other conditions. Week 7 is an exciting time for you and your baby, as you will both be changing rapidly.
At 7 weeks, the embryo now measures between 4. The embryo shows flurries of rapid movements at this stage. The liver is now producing red blood cells, and will continue to do so until bone marrow is formed which then takes over the production of red blood cells. The basic structures of all major body parts and organs are formed during this time, with much of the growth being focused on the brain.
The first blood vessels of the circulatory system appear. The appendix and pancreas are now evident, and inside the mouth, tooth buds, a tongue and the palate are all developing. The ears are continuing to form while the eyes are now covered with the beginnings of what will later become eyelids.

In early pregnancy, especially before 11 weeks, it is usual to have a trans-vaginal internal scan , where a probe is placed in the vagina. This gives the clearest and most accurate picture in early pregnancy. The person doing the scan spreads a special gel on your lower abdomen below your belly button and above the line of pubic hair. He or she then moves the scanner over the gel, sometimes pressing down, until the uterus womb and pregnancy can be seen.
That may give some information about your pregnancy, but it is less clear than an internal scan and that could possibly delay diagnosis. There is no evidence that having a vaginal or an abdominal scan will cause a miscarriage or harm your baby. If you bleed after a vaginal scan, it will most likely be because there was already blood pooled higher in the vagina and the probe dislodged it.
